Last night’s Patch Tuesday for Windows 8 scrubbed my profile settings. All but 3 tiles on the Start screen were removed (they were still on the secondary screen), the desktop background was gone, the Run dialog box lost its history, and so did IE, and who knows what else. I restored most of it by going to the Restart button and choosing Finish Restoring and Restart — twice. And that still didn’t restore the desktop, but that was easy enough to do manually.
I have to imagine that a typical, non-technical user wouldn’t know to do that, and would have to call for support. Microsoft needs to exercise better quality control of patches.
