Use Excel’s YEAR function to extract the year from a date

Happy new year! This is a good time to show Excel’s YEAR function. It extracts the current year from a date. It works whether you entered the date manually, if the date is the result of the =TODAY() or =NOW() functions, or if the date is a serial number, and it works regardless of formatting.

The syntax is:
=YEAR(date)

For example, if the value of A2 is 12/31/2017, the result of =YEAR(A2) is 2017.
